Lars Arrhenius, The man without qualities, 2003
Dans une scénographie intelligente et efficace, Histoires animées est présentée au Fresnoy après avoir été montrée au Caixaforum à Barcelone et au Guggenheim à Bilbao. Le parcours alterne avec pertinence projections, installations et moniteurs et nous entraîne dans des images rassemblées pour leur façon de s’emparer de la technique de l’animation dans des projets engagés.

Kota Osawa présente une installation à trois projections, Lennon, Sontag, Beuys,( 2004), qui nous met face à ces trois célébrités interviewées sur leurs relations à l’art et à l’engagement politique. Susan Sontag explique ainsi son intérêt pour la photographie qui s’attache à représenter le monde et ses violences, l’hommes et ses injustices, mais affirme que ces images, si fortes soient-elles, ne font que montrer, qu’elles n’entraînent pas véritablement les spectateurs à opérer de changements dans leurs manières d’habiter ensemble. Nous l’entendons alors s’interroger sur les moyens de faire évoluer ce constat, sur sa quête de formes artistiques qui s’investiraient réellement dans des engagements politiques face au monde. Cet extrait est en fait une parfaite introduction à l’exposition, dont le parti-pris est justement de reprendre les questionnements ouverts par Susan Sontag en proposant d’y répondre par le lieu de l’image animée. Une réponse a priori contradictoire puisque l’engagement dans le monde se fait en s’éloignant du réel, en se libérant de la contrainte de la prise de vue et ainsi de la croyance dans le pouvoir de témoignage de l’image documentaire, et en s’emparant de l’animation. Au-delà d’une technique de création d’image, dont Laurence Dreyfus, co-commissaire, resitue clairement l’histoire dans le catalogue, l’animation est marquée par une certaine posture face au monde. Les artistes qui l’utilisent, et dont l’exposition montre une sélection de très grande qualité, investissent le champ de la fiction, de l’imaginaire enfantin et ludique de la tradition de l’animation. Ils y déploient des visions narratives, poétiques, symboliques, ils en font des lieux où se tissent des histoires qui, aussi détachées soient-elles de l’objet-monde par leur création d’environnements virtuels, ne cessent de s’engager dans des sujets qui le racontent et l’interrogent.

Les artistes exposés, très nombreux, viennent d’horizons très différents, par leurs nationalités mais aussi parce qu’ils croisent les histoires du cinéma et des arts plastiques, révélant de la part des commissaires, Juan Antonio Alvarez Reyes, Marta Gili, Laurence Dreyfus et Neus Miro, une ambition pluri-disciplinaire bien en phase avec le Fresnoy. Les films mêlent leurs univers en affirmant chez certains un engagement politique clair, comme Conversation with Harris de Sheila M. Sofian, où l’artiste dialogue en voix-off avec un enfant bosniaque de onze ans réfugié aux Etats-Unis. Les mots et les émotions sont dénonciateurs et sont portés par des animations de peintures jouant sur des gros plans, des coulures suggérant avec poésie ce que le texte seul n’aurait pas su évoquer. Feng Mengbo construit également ses vidéos sur une critique politique, de l’histoire chinoise cette fois, dans des juxtapositions d’images au crayon noir balayées par le cercle restreint d’une sorte d’oeil de caméra au regard partial, et baignées dans des musiques traditionnelles contrastant avec la violence représentée. Places (Gardening 2) de Hans Op de Beeck est une animation de dessins en N/B qui fait le récit du devenir d’un paysage boisé en jardin privatif. L’absence d’humains confère au lieu une beauté énigmatique qui se métamorphose en violence émotionelle lorsque, les arbres transformés en bâtiment, des clôtures surmontées de barbelés viennent entourer le terrain. Une oeuvre qui résonne fortement avec l’univers de William Kentridge, dont l’exposition présentait une pièce moins connue que ses animations au fusain. Shadow procession est un défilé de réfugiés et mutilés traversant le champ visuel sur une musique d’accordéon douce et lancinante, et révélant par moments leurs ossatures de pantins de carton. La dimension poétique de cette pièce se retrouve dans de nombreuses vidéos, comme celle de Joshua Mosley, A vue, qui raconte une histoire chargée en dénonciation de l’emprise du professionnel sur l’épanouissement personnel, mais dont la réussite tient moins dans le scénario que dans la force de ses dessins et dans le rythme lent et évocateur de leur animation

Aux vidéos clairement impliquées dans des propos engagés, et que les résumés ont tendance à fort mal rendre compte, se mêlaient des vidéos plus évasives, plus éclatées dans des champs de significations ouverts. Ainsi Zilla Leutenegger se met en scène dans O mein papa, jeune fille habillée d’une robe blanche, dans une pelleteuse qui la transporte dans un chantier nocturne, gris, désert, mais baigné d’une très grande douceur, celle de la pelleteuse dans ses façons de manier le coprs endormi, mais aussi celle de la musique qui rythme le cheminement. D’autres encore manient humour et ironie avec dynamisme, comme Arthur de Pince et La révolution des crabes, petite fable philosophique sur des crabes dépressifs, ou Lars Arrhenius avec The man without qualities, cycle de vie d’un homme uniquement représenté en pictogrammes et dont les petits bonheurs et malheurs sont évoqués par des sons très rudimentaires. Face à ces images, on sourit puis on rigole, et on continue ainsi l’immersion dans un parcours dont le dynamisme poétique des traits ne manque jamais d’accompagner la représentation d’une contemporanéité peu réjouissante.
